Winder Safety

  • If the light beam is broken at any time the Line Speed and Winder speed are limited to 15 M/Min – the tension could also be limited to 150 Newtons
  • This interlock is “overridden” for operational purposes by the addition of a “dead man’s push button”
  • The override is a two man job, the person outside of the “zone” operating the button takes responsibility for the safety of the man inside the zone
  • If the dead man’s push button is activated then it is possible to enter the zone to perform operational duties such as checking rolls for winding quality/tension, alignment of new cores, taping of new cores etc.
  • A man outside the zone has to hold the push button active while his colleague enters the zone to perform operational duties – if the dead man’s switch is activated and the light beam is broken nothing happens to the machine – speed and tension remain the same
  • If the man outside the zone holding the dead man’s push button releases the push button then the machine stops immediately – like an emergency stop condition.
  • NOTE – it should be checked if it is possible for the man in the zone to be in such a position next to the winding shaft and “past” the light beam such that the light beam is not broken – if so then this procedure does not work – it would be better with a safety mat.
  • A light beam across the Nip Point between the winding drum and the wound roll would provide additional safety.
  • The position of the dead man’s push button should be such that the man operating the push button can see the man in the zone at all times
